LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers can share their support experiences now

News - from NFS & our agency friends

A word from...... James Lawrence, Head of Communications & Engagement

The summer school holidays can be a mixed picture for LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers. Some families easily slip into a routine where the challenges of school can fade and everyone relaxes.

For others it’s more difficult. For them the time is spent keeping on keeping on. Their children thrown by a change to the routine and the family has to support them as the child’s behaviour changes. Even simple tasks become daunting. A coffee out with a friend and their children feels impossible. For those adoptive parents and foster carers it’s easy to become isolated as a way to avoid conflict and the disapproval of others at your child’s behaviour.

That’s why events like our summer camp can be a lifeline for some LGBTQ+ adoptive parents and foster carers. Surrounded by other families look like theirs, they aren’t in the minority and know that everyone around them understands why their children’s behaviour can suddenly change. As well as our organised summer camp in August in the West Midlands there’s also an informal camping get-together of LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers in the South East.

For our members who need support but can’t make it out of the house, we’ll hold our monthly coffee mornings throughout the summer months. Our LGBTQ+ Gold members who foster can also attend our dedicated group.

However you spend your summer we hope you manage to relax and regroup, before the onset of Autumn
