LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering Week 2026

#NowsTheTime

LGBTQ+ Adoption & Fostering Week returns from 2 March, 2026. If you're LGBTQ+ and considering adopting or fostering this is the campaign for you. You don't need to wait for the perfect time to start your journey. You won't be the first person from our community to adopt or foster with the agency you choose. The child whose life you transform through adoption or fostering is already waiting to be introduced to you. #NowsTheTime to take the first step on your adoption or fostering journey.

Wherever you are in the UK, there's an urgent need for more LGBTQ+ people to consider adoption and fostering. And by adopting or fostering you'll transform the life of a vulnerable child as well as your own.

Below you can see some basic information about adoption and fostering. There's also a free tool to help you find agencies near you that offer free access to dedicated support for LGBTQ+ applicants, adoptive parents and foster carers. And across the campaign we'll share new video clips across our Facebook and Instagram channels, as well as list some of our most popular podcast episodes below.

FAQs

Will I be the first LGBTQ+ person the agency has worked with?

No. While no government in the UK publishes data on how many LGBTQ+ people foster, we do know how many same gender couples adopt each year.

In England 1 in 5 adoptions in 2025 were to same-gender couples, accounting for 610 of 3040 adoptions.  In Scotland, 1 in 8 adoptions in 2024 were to same-gender couples, accounting for 48 out of 369 adoptions.

The latest statistics in Wales - released at the start of 2025 - show that 1 in 5 adoptions in Wales in 2024 were to same-gender couples.

1 in 11 adoptions in Northern Ireland in 2025 were to same-gender couples. According to the government 'some 9 per cent [of adopters] were same sex couples who were married, in a civil partnership or unmarried'.
